Salzburg Valkenauerstrasse is the entry for the planning phase of a limited competition by SAATarchitecture for a multi family apartment complex with 47 living units of varying sizes in the outskirts of Salzburg.

The site is a triangular plot of land right next to a busy train-line whose presence was a major consideration because of the resulting noise issue. The surrounding buildings are a mix of traditional single-family homes and modern housing developments from 3-5 stories high. In order to contain the noise and to open up the building complex towards the south side and the surrounding community, SAATarchitecture created a zig zaging backbone that shields the site from the noise of the train tracks while housing the circulation as well as utilitarian spaces such as kitchens and bathrooms that are not as noise sensitive in it.

On the south side 4 “fingers” of varying heights create courtyard spaces that allow for light and air to penetrate into every unit and that terminate in detached maisonette buildings that establish a direct relationship to the scale of the surrounding buildings. A 60 car naturally ventilated underground parking garage is situated directly underneath the apartment complex that interweaves with the public green spaces in between the buildings.
