Indicate Ranch

  • Location
    Sonoma County, CA
    Year
  • under construction

Indicate Ranch is a partially submerged residence in the hills east of Healdsburg in Sonoma County, California. The design of the structure is the result of a collaboration with Richard Hansen of Indicate Design and was developed from the inside out; placing emphasis – in addition to the programmatic requirements – on spatial transitions, connections and volumetric experiences throughout the space. The entire structure is built in its entirety out of concrete with board-formed walls and floors with small exposed aggregate that originates from the site.

The program includes an indoor pool, a spa, a game room, a home theater, a small gym as well as 5 bedrooms and a living room area with a sunken conversation pit and panoramic views of the surrounding mountains.

The building will be entirely off grid with a dedicated solar farm, a well with a water tank and a septic field. Active and passive systems will be used throughout in order to achieve a well-balanced and sustainable atmosphere. The roof is covered with a thick layer of soil and local grasses that provide insulation and further the integration of the building into the site as they are left to grow and wither with the seasons.

In order to keep construction costs at a reasonable level it was imperative to find new ways of structuring the entire construction process from the contractual setup to an in-depth understanding of the supply chain and constructability of every aspect of the project.
