Artist Loft

  • Location
    San Francisco, CA
    Year
  • 2009

The artist loft is a 1,225 sf condominium located in the historic AMC building on 1000 Van Ness in San Francisco that was designed for a young artist who wanted a versatile live-work loft to reflect his lifestyle. Working with a limited budget, spatial restrictions and the client’s desire to create a modern, spacious and flexible environment, it was imperative to develop creative and highly customized solutions that would meet those demands.

In order to differentiate the functional areas and provide privacy for the more intimate areas of the loft while maintaining the expansive nature of the 12 foot high space, nottoscale introduced an elevated platform at the core of the loft that is open to, yet visually separated from the kitchen. With this simple yet effective design move, nottoscale was able to maintain the sweeping views of San Francisco’s City Hall from both, the bedroom and the living area / open kitchen. The bedroom is divided from the corridor by a floor to ceiling translucent wall, allowing light to filter through while providing privacy. A private corridor connects the bathroom with the bedroom as well as with the closet and the laundry nook, keeping the more functional areas out of sight from the public areas.

All millwork in the kitchen and the bathroom was custom designed by nottoscale. Dark wood floors contrast with bright white walls, a translucent dividing wall, millwork clad in Zebrawood veneer and light green Italian mosaic glass tiles in the bathroom, create a modern yet comfortable and inviting atmosphere.
